Getting Started
Lag is a voice-first communication platform built for speed. This guide walks you through account creation, navigating the interface, and getting your first server running.
Creating Your Account
Lag uses OAuth for authentication - there are no passwords to remember. You can sign up with either Discord or Google.
- Visit trylag.com and click Sign Up
- Choose your OAuth provider (Discord or Google)
- Authorize Lag to access your basic profile information
- You will be redirected back to Lag with your account ready
Your display name and avatar are pulled from your OAuth provider. You can change these later in Settings.
Navigating the Interface
The main interface is split into a few key areas:
- Server sidebar - The left column shows your servers, DM conversations, and navigation to friends and settings
- Room list - When viewing a server, the second column lists all voice and text rooms
- Main content area - The center shows the active room, conversation, or settings panel
- Voice controls - When connected to a voice room, audio controls appear at the bottom
Creating Your First Server
Servers are the core of Lag. They hold your rooms, members, and bots.
- Click the + button in the server sidebar
- Enter a name for your server
- Your server is created with a default voice room
You are automatically the owner of any server you create. Owners have full control over rooms, members, invites, and robot integrations.
Inviting Friends
To bring people into your server:
- Open your server and navigate to the invite settings
- Generate an invite link or code
- Share the link with your friends - they can join by visiting it in their browser
Invite links can be set to expire or limited to a certain number of uses.
Joining a Voice Room
Click any voice room in the room list to join it. Your microphone will be active based on your voice settings (push-to-talk or voice activity detection). You will see other participants listed in the room, along with indicators showing who is currently speaking.
